Four decades! I was so ready to embrace this milestone. Before COVID hit, I’d started mentally planning an epic party. Rooftop, DJ, taco truck, mariachi band..the whole shebang. 2021 had other plans. I adjusted my expectations, and prepared for a quiet weekend of fun.

I kicked things off the Thursday before my birthday, with a carefree Malibu photo shoot to commemorate the occasion. It was important to me to document this point in my life, and photographer Molly Pan did a wonderful job capturing it.

The Friday before my birthday, I checked into the Kimpton La Peer in West Hollywood. I spent a peaceful night and morning in a lovely room…alone! Brandon met me for dinner at Olivetta. All of the food was incredible, but the branzino was especially memorable. The service at the hotel was fantastic. I particularly liked the fact that my delicious room service breakfast arrived in a cute picnic basket.

A few girlfriends then took me out to Sunday brunch at AOC, one of those great Los Angeles brunch spots. We laughed and drank…appreciative of the fact that we were able to be safely out and about. Back home, Lily and Brandon had a cake ready to go.

My actual birthday fell on a Monday. I kicked it off in the best possible way, with a fun IG live promoting my book. Brandon and I then went to have a fancy breakfast at the Peninsula in Beverly Hills. My huevos rancheros and champagne…perfection. After playing with Lily and resting, we went for an early family dinner at Felix in Venice. It was a great birthday meal, capped by yummy tiramisu and a birthday candle. Given all that’s gone on over the last year, I really couldn’t have asked for more.

I hope things are better by the time my next birthday rolls around. Still, I wouldn’t change anything about my 40th, pandemic and all. I spent time with some of the people I love most, and they made me feel like the most important person in the world. For the record, 40 has been great so far. I’m excited to see what the rest of this year brings.
